The #1 Facebook Ads Mistake That's Costing You Money (And How to Fix It!)
Here's the cold, hard truth: Meta wants you to default to settings that benefit THEM, not YOU.
Since 2012, I've helped hundreds of clients navigate the complex world of Facebook advertising. In that time, I've seen one mistake consistently sabotage campaigns across businesses of all sizes, from solopreneurs to 8-figure companies.
Just last week, I sat down with a client who had set up campaigns based on our framework. The moment I looked at his results, I knew exactly what had happened. He'd fallen into the same trap that's costing advertisers thousands in wasted ad spend:
Facebook's "Advantage Plus" features had hijacked his campaigns.
If you're new to Facebook ads, you might not know what I'm talking about. But if you're running campaigns and not seeing results, pay close attention. This could be the breakthrough you've been looking for.
The Meta Bait-and-Switch
Over the past five years, Meta has dramatically changed how campaigns get set up. Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, they removed many targeting options we previously relied on.
But here's what they don't tell you: As they removed targeting power from advertisers, they simultaneously introduced default settings that give THEM more control over your campaigns.
These settings are presented as "helpful" automation. In reality, they're designed to serve Meta's interests, not your campaign objectives.
The Three Advantage Plus Traps You Must Avoid
Let me break down the three major "booby traps" that Meta has strategically placed in your campaign setup process:
TRAP #1: Advantage Campaign Budget Optimization
Where it appears: At the campaign level setup
What it does: Takes your total campaign budget and distributes it across your ad sets however THEY want.
Why it's a problem: When you're testing new messages, angles, or audiences, you need equal distribution of budget to gather meaningful data. With this setting on, Meta might allocate 80% of your budget to just one ad set, starving the others before they have a chance to perform.
What to do instead: Turn OFF campaign budget optimization for new campaigns and manually set budgets at the ad set level until you have significant conversion data.
TRAP #2: Advantage Audience Expansion
Where it appears: In the ad set targeting section
What it does: Ignores your carefully selected targeting parameters if Meta "thinks" your audience should be somewhere else.
Why it's a problem: You've spent time researching your ideal audience, but this setting gives Meta permission to completely disregard your choices.
What to do instead: Uncheck the "audience expansion" button (they hide it in a conspicuous place). Look for "switch to original audiences" in the ad set section.
TRAP #3: Advantage Plus Placements
Where it appears: In the ad set setup where you choose where ads appear
What it does: Places your ads anywhere across Meta's properties, including low-quality placements like games and the audience network.
Why it's a problem: Your high-value prospects aren't hanging out in all these places. As I tell my clients: "I guarantee you, your 7-figure business customer is not playing games on Meta." This setting dumps your budget into "garbage placements" where your ideal customers simply don't exist.
What to do instead: Switch to manual placements and select only the premium locations where your audience actually spends time.
The Creative Sabotage You're Unknowingly Approving
There's one more trap waiting at the ad level itself: automatic optimizations or "enhancements."
These innocuous-looking toggles give Meta permission to alter your carefully crafted creative: adding music, chopping up your video, or redesigning your layout.
Think about that for a second. You've invested time and resources creating the perfect ad, only to hand Meta a blank check to change whatever they want!
What to do instead: Turn OFF all auto optimization toggles at the ad level (there are usually 4 of them).
When Automation Actually Makes Sense
To be clear: I'm not anti-automation. In fact, for mature advertisers with significant pixel data, Meta's AI can be incredibly powerful.
The problem occurs when:
- You're just starting out
- You're testing new campaigns
- You don't have a history of conversions
- You're running non-conversion campaigns like video views
In these scenarios, you need training wheels on your campaigns before letting Meta's algorithms run wild.
A Real-World Success Story
Let me share what happened with the client I mentioned earlier.
After identifying these hidden settings in his account, we:
- Disabled all Advantage Plus features
- Switched to manual placements focusing only on the news feed and stories
- Turned off all creative optimizations
- Redistributed the budget evenly across ad sets
The result? Within 72 hours, his cost per lead dropped by 43%, and his conversion rate increased by 31%.
The same ad creative. The same targeting. The same budget.
The only difference? Taking back control from Meta's default settings.
Take Action Now: Your 10-Minute Campaign Audit
If you've invested in Facebook ads without seeing the results you expected, take 10 minutes to audit your campaigns:
- Go to your Facebook Ads Manager
- Open any active campaigns
- Check for "Advantage" or "Optimization" settings at each level
- Disable them according to the guidelines above
You might be shocked at how many of these settings have been quietly activated in your account, even ones you previously turned off! (Yes, Meta has been known to re-enable these settings without notification.)
The Bottom Line
Facebook and Instagram remain among the best platforms for reaching cold traffic and turning strangers into customers. But you need to understand the rules of the game.
When Meta says "advantage," always ask: "Advantage for whom?"
Take back control of your campaigns, and you'll be amazed at what's actually possible with this powerful platform.
